The Little Chicago Development Company has opened the doors to their new Tourist Information Bus. This is the group that is planning a development on the zero block of River Street West. It features brochures and pamphlets from local businesses and attractions to make a visit to the city more enjoyable. The bus also features some fantastic art work. Prince Albert Region

Nipawin
Nipawin continues to be a role model for other communities with the Nipawin Representative Workforce program that was initiated in 2006 to develop strategies to employ and promote opportunities for aboriginal people in the workforce. The nine new partners joining this program are A&W, Harold's Sports & Shoes, Harpers Pharmacy, the Nipawin Journal, Nipawin Oasis Community Centre Cooperative, Northern Greens Resort, OK Tire, RONA/Pinecrest Lumber Ltd. and Spectrum Signs and Printing. Prince Albert
Result Cosmetic & Wellness Therapies has opened for business in Prince Albert, offering cold laser therapy, high frequency treatments, dustless microdermabrasion, far infrared sauna therapy and ionic footbath treatments. Correctional Services Canada announced that the new 96-bed maximum security unit currently being constructed at Saskatchewan Penitentiary will be finished, but at this time the federal government has no plans to build a new prison. (Prince Albert Daily Herald, July 3, 2008)

Fire, believed to be set by vandals, caused an estimated $100,000 damage at Cook Municipal Golf Course, destroying 14 golf carts, a 500-gallon fuel tank, a scoreboard and a utility trailer. (Prince Albert Daily Herald, July 2, 2008)

ROCKcees, a 200 seat nightclub and eatery opened for business in the city. Owners are Edward Lucier and Dennis Adams. The décor is described as Hard Rock Café feel with all the historic memorabilia. (Prince Albert Daily Herald, June 30, 2008)

Advantage Credit Union (ACU) is pleased to announce the construction of a new branch location in Prince Albert. The current branch is located on 16th Street West; the new location will be located on 15th Street East in the Cornerstone Shopping area. The sod has been turned and construction will begin in July. The anticipated opening date of the new branch is February 2009. ACU with Administration Offices in Melfort, Birch Hills and Prince Albert has branches located in 17 communities throughout north-eastern and north central Saskatchewan. Shellbrook
The Town of Shellbrook has purchased 160 acres of land west of the town boundary to facilitate a multitude of uses; possibilities include residential, commercial and industrial zoning as well as a sewage lagoon. (Shellbrook Chronicle, June 27, 2008)

St. Brieux
Bourgault Industries, the St. Brieux based company is building 10 mobile housing units and helping employees buy them. With the pressure on housing in the northeast Bourgault Industries is providing an incentive to employees to buy a mobile home unit. The housing program is mainly for existing employees, who will own the houses. There is up to a $5,000 signing bonus and the company will provide up to $400 a month in a mortgage subsidy for three years. The signing bonus and mortgage subsidy is contingent on signing a three-year contract. The company realizes not all employees can live in St. Brieux and is also offering a gas subsidy for employees that took effect June 1st, based on the number of hours employees work. Tisdale
Construction of a Super 8 Motel is to begin this month, which will be located east of the Tisdale Mall alongside the Tempo and Co-op Fuel station. The 64-66 room facility is expected to be operational in February/March 2009. The project estimated cost is around $5 million. (The Tisdale Recorder, July 2, 2008)


 

Regina Region

Buena Vista
Construction is expected to begin in 2009 for a $1 million environmentally friendly sewage treatment facility. There could be an economic benefit to having a solar-aquatic sewage facility as the treated effluent coming out of this type of plant is a marketable product rather than waste. Dysart

Echo Valley Provincial Park
A new campground service centre in Echo Valley opened on May 15th. It is a multi-use facility with laundry, washroom, and shower facilities. (Fort Qu'Appelle Times, July 1, 2008)

Foam Lake
On June 30th, the Foam Lake branch of RBC held a party to celebrate 100 years of service in the community. (Foam Lake Review, July 7, 2008)

An estimated 100 people turned out for the customer appreciation day sponsored by the new owners of Fast Freddy's Car Wash (previously known as K & S Carwash). Steve and Kari Bruce officially took over the business on July 1st from Kris, Anne, and Svein Eyolfson. (Foam Lake Review, July 7, 2008)

Fort Qu'Appelle
Maternity care services at the All Nations' Healing Hospital (ANHH) are set to expand following $1.3 million funding from the Aboriginal Health Transition fund. The hospital facility, which is owned and operated by the File Hills and Touchwood Agency Tribal Councils, has been providing low-risk maternity care but is now in a position to expand the services. Govan
For the second time in less than five months, a tentative deal to re-open the Govan Hotel and Café has apparently hit a snag. The hotel, bar, and café have been closed since early March when a previous sale arrangement could not be finalized. (Last Mountain Times, July 1, 2008)

Indian Head

Regina
The old Budget Express, which closed its doors on February 24th, is currently being demolished to make room for the new $5 million, 102-room Holiday Inn Express, which will be open later this summer. (Regina Leader-Post, June 28, 2008)

Casa Latina restaurant, located at 1849 Broad Street, is now open. Casa Latina is owned by Julio Montas Casillo and Tammy Leipert De Montas. (Regina Downtown)

The Regina Downtown Business Improvement District's holiday television commercial - Santa Shops Downtown II - recently won a Gold Remi award under the "Institutional Identity" category at the 41st annual WorldFest, Houston's International Film Festival. True Color Productions of Regina, produced the commercial for Regina Downtown's Christmas campaign. (Regina Downtown)

Regina's housing market continued to cool off in June according to the Association of Regina Realtors. There were 302 homes sold on the multiple listing service (MLS) last month, a decrease of one-third from the record setting 453 sales in June 2007. For the year-to-date, 1,932 residential properties sold on the MLS, down 7% from the record high of 2,708 sales posted in the first six months of 2007. (Regina Leader-Post, July 4, 2008)

Information released by the city for the first six months of this year shows that the city issued permits for construction valued at $188.7 million, which is slightly above the $188.5 million in building permits issued for the first six months of 2007. (Regina Leader-Post, July 5, 2008)

A new high-technology service to record and transmit information about a patient's blood pressure and blood glucose level was unveiled at a Regina press on July 10th. The LifeStat monitoring and Health Management system is being offered through a partnership between SaskTel and a French-based multi-national company called Alcatel-Lucent, which have together created the Salveo partnership. RM of Wreford
A new hangar was recently constructed at the municipal airstrip. The building will be used as protective shelter for the crop spraying aircraft working in the local area. (Last Mountain Times, July 1, 2008)

Strasbourg
Work has begun on a new subdivision in Strasbourg's north end. As a result of the construction, 14 new lots will be made available for purchase - the first since 1976. (Last Mountain Time, July 1, 2008)

Watrous
Watrous residents can look forward to a new secured storage facility opening up in the areas as soon as early fall. The facility will run under the ownership of Burt Crawford and Lionel Sproule. (The Watrous Manitou, June 30, 2008)

Boehr Construction will begin building the 12 unit condominium project along 8th Avenue this summer. The project should be complete in 2009. (The Watrous Manitou, June 30, 2008)

Close to 100 people attended the grand opening of Watrous New Holland on June 4th. The dealership recently became part of a three-store chain, which also includes Raymore and Yorkton New Holland. (Last Mountain Times, July 8, 2008)

White City
The Clear Vistas Management Corporation announced it has finalized the acquisition of 540 acres of land needed for their project which would be developed south of the Transcanada Highway and south of the Emerald Park Golf and Country Club in the Rural Municipality of Edenwold. The company hopes to obtain zoning approval for the project in 2009 with actual construction beginning late in 2009 or 2010. (Regina Leader-Post, July 10, 2008)


Saskatoon Region

Hepburn
Hepburn is experiencing a housing boom. There has been a substantial amount of infilling and larger lots are being subdivided. Two larger subdivisions are also being developed-one on the south side of town with 21 lots and one in the northwest corner with 31 lots. (The Saskatchewan Valley News, July 3, 2008)

Neuanlage
Groundwork has started on a new subdivision for the Hamlet of Neuanlage that will open up 111 residential lots. (The Saskatchewan Valley News, July 3, 2008)

Rosthern
Dental service will return to Rosthern with the opening of Valley Dental Clinic later this summer. The clinic is located between Pogo's Bargain Centre and Mackies Oriental Grill and will be owned and operated by Dr. Cam Croll. Horizon Pet Nutrition of Rosthern is expanding its building, doubling the 6,000-square-foot operations to a 12,000-square-foot facility. Horizon started manufacturing pet care products two years ago at the plant on the east side of town and is seeing its sales continue to increase. (The Saskatchewan Valley News, July 3, 2008)

Saskatoon
Tap Communications of Saskatoon won two international business awards this week in New York. Tap took two Gold Quill awards presented by the International Association of Business Communications (IABC). Both were for advertising campaigns prepared for Synergy Credit Union, a merged entity formed by the Lloydminster and Kindersley and District Credit Unions. Kindersley
Kindersley will be among the areas most affected by Saskatchewan's growing labour shortage, business leaders learned last month at a breakfast presentation hosted by the Kindersley Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Can-Sask Career and Employment Services, West Central REDA, and Prairie West Regional College. Speakers focused on recruiting internationally, and the importance of communities to have the resources in place to help ease the cultural adjustment. (The Clarion, July 9, 2008)

Maple Creek
The Chuckwagon Express, a mobile unit that sells hamburgers, hotdogs, homemade chili, pop, and more, has opened for business under the management of Calgarian, Maggie Dutton. (Maple Creek News-Times, June 26, 2008)

Alleykatz, a non-profit daycare, celebrated 10 years of service in the area. Alleykatz serves 46 families with licensed spaces for 33 children. (Maple Creek News-Times, July 8, 2008)

Piapot
After a two-year hiatus, the Piapot Hotel has opened its doors again under the ownership of Calgarian owners, Glenn Bonnet and Nicole Spooner. Apart from being an important part of the social network, the hotel is the only viable business and the sole place to go for coffee, drinks or to buy food and snacks. Prelate
The Prelate branch of Sandhills Credit Union will be closing its doors on September 26th. The closure is the result of continued declining deposit growth, membership numbers and traffic levels at the Prelate branch. (Leader News, July 2, 2008)

Regional
The Government of Saskatchewan has approved the merger of Prairie West and Cypress Regional Colleges effective July 1, 2008. The merger will form a new institution called Great Plains College, with nine campuses in Warman, Biggar, Kindersley, Rosetown, Outlook, Swift Current, Gravelbourg, Maple Creek and Shaunavon. Community and business leaders from across the southwest joined their counterparts from Northern Montana during a meeting with U.S. Senator Jon Tester in Turner, Mont. Last week. The purpose of the meeting of approximately 45 people, which included Cypress Hills-Grasslands MP David Anderson and Cypress Hills REDA general manager Jay Meyer, was for Sask-Mont Rural Development members to present its case for a 24-hour port, and to show how this would boost the economy in communities on both sides of the border. Southwest
The Action Southwest regional partnership presented their findings of a survey of approximately 1,200 businesses from across Southwest Saskatchewan. The information will go into what is called a frame work report along with a lot of other information about the Southwest. Doug Elliot, Owner of QED Information Systems and publisher of Trends Monitor, was surprised to find that a large portion of businesses are doing most of their business in the Southwest and that many businesses were in business to provide community support, and were not only focusing on profit. Swift Current
The Living Sky Casino held a job fair July 3rd to showcase the roughly 300 positions that are available. (www.swiftcurrentonline.com, July 3, 2008)

Once again the City of Swift Current held a lot draw for 38 open lots for sale on Highland Drive, Sterling Bay and Prestwick Drive. Over 240 applications were received. Another 54 lots will become available in the fall. (Southwest Booster, July 3, 2008)

The Swift Current Service Canada Centre for Youth hosted their annual Youth Opportunities Week on July 7 to 11. The week is intended to promote youth employment by providing job opportunities and networking events for young people and employers. (Southwest Booster, July 3, 2008)

Trikoot Real Estate Services, which focuses strictly on Property Management Services, has unveiled plans to offer their property management services throughout the province. (Southwest Booster, July 3, 3008)

Following a record year for building permits in 2007, Swift Current could be on pace to set another record again this year. In May 2008, 96 permits were dealt with, compared to the 89 in 2007. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Dr. John Clarke, a durum breeder at the Semiarid Prairie Agricultural Research Centre in Swift Current, has won two prestigious awards. Dr. Clarke earned the Public Service Award of Excellence, presented to him for his innovative work in wheat breeding, as well as the Gold Harvest Award for his accomplishments in research during his 35 years with AAFC, including a leadership role in the Canadian industry developing durum wheat. His work in improving wheat varieties has contributed enormously to the development of the $4-billion wheat industry in Canada and its competitiveness in global markets. Esterhazy

Kamsack

Kipling

Melville
Babcock & Wilcox have announced they will be laying off 48 staff effective September 12, 2008. The company is trying to branch out into other markets, but unless contracts get signed, the layoffs will take place. (Regina Leader-Post, July 5, 2008)

Moosomin
Barry Ireland of VBine Energy won the Best New Invention award at the Western Canada Farm Progress Show in Regina for his vertical wind generator. (The World-Spectator, Moosomin, June 23, 2008)

Robert and Rose Mullett of True Value have purchased the independent dealer rights for the new Rona Hardware store. Although they will not carry every item the larger Rona Stores have, customers can find products online at Rona.ca and have them delivered to the Moosomin store. After four generations of family ownership, Miller Farm Equipment, which has six locations, including one on the Trans-Canada Highway in Moosomin, has been purchased by Rocky Mountain Dealerships out of Calgary. Saltcoats
The Saltcoats and District Daycare is now open. The centre has been approved for 26 spaces, but 32 children have already been registered, coming from Saltcoats, Bredenbury and surrounding area. The centre consists of 3 full-time and several part-time positions, and is co-ordinated by a volunteer committee, consisting primarily of parents of youngsters attending. Wapella
When CD Fine Foods closed their doors earlier this year, a seven-member steering committee headed an initiative to sell shares in what will be an incorporated business for $100 each. The target to sell $65,000 worth of shares was met within 12 days. The currently un-named new store will open in August. It will be operated as a private company, employing one full-time and two part-time employees. Shareholders will be meeting to vote on a board of directors for the corporation, and deciding on a business name, bylaws and determine what the store's hours of operation will be. Yorkton
CTV Yorkton celebrated 50 years of television in Yorkton on June 19, 2008. (Yorkton This Week, June 18, 2008)

The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce will be looking for a new general manager after Donna Brothwell, manager for the past six years, handed in her resignation. (Yorkton This Week, June 25, 2008)

Yorkton will become a new chapter for Habitat For Humanity, due to The Mosaic Potash Company donating $450,000 towards Habitat For Humanity Saskatchewan. The Yorkton organization is currently operating under the Regina Chapter, with the goal of eventually establishing a stand-alone chapter which will cover the region. Habitat For Humanity Yorkton hopes to build its first home under the Adopt-A-Home Program for a local family in 2009. (Regina Leader-Post, June 26, 2008 and Yorkton This Week, July 2, 2008)


Saskatchewan

A report by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) reports that Saskatchewan small business owners have the highest business performance expectation in Western Canada. (Last Mountain Times, July 1, 2008)

A new report by RBC economics predicts economic growth in Saskatchewan of 3.7% this year and 3.8 % in 2009. RBC economics believes Saskatchewan could post the best economic growth in Canada for this year and next. (Regina Leader-Post, July 4, 2008)

Saskatchewan's value of building permits for May 2008 was one of the best in the country. Overall, building permits for May 2008 totalled $217 million, up by 34.5% from last May, and is the second highest percentage increase in Canada. (Government of Saskatchewan News Release, July 7, 2008)

Saskatchewan posted another double-digit, year-over-year increase in new vehicle sales in April for the seventh consecutive month, according to Statistics Canada. Saskatchewan had a 17.6% increase in sales compared with April 2007 - second-highest among the provinces after New Brunswick. (Saskatoon Star Phoenix and Regina Leader-Post, June 17, 2008)

SaskMusic is hoping that a new study will highlight how the Saskatchewan music industry is contributing to the provinces economy. The study results will be released in late August and will show how the music industry generates economic growth and employment opportunities in the province. (Regina Leader-Post, June 18, 2008)

A feasibility study into the potential for a nuclear energy plant in Saskatchewan will be completed by the end of the year. The study is the first step in Bruce Power LP's (a nuclear power producer in Ontario) Saskatchewan 2020 initiative, which is a plan to find potential plant locations, gauge public opinion, evaluate the customer base, and eventually decide whether or not to build the provinces first nuclear power plant. The province's growing need for energy and availability of uranium are key factors in the company's decision to consider Saskatchewan as a possible plant site. (Regina Leader-Post, June 18, 2008)

Saskatchewan's wholesale trade increased by 37.6% in April over April of last year. This is the largest increase among the provinces and surpassing the national average of 5.7%. (Regina Leader-Post, June 20, 2008)

The June 2008 sale of Crown oil and natural gas rights has produced the third largest single sale in Saskatchewan history, and added to the new record for annual sales set this year. The June sales raised $142.5 million in revenue for the province. (Last Mountain Times, June 24, 2008)

According to Statistics Canada, the number of people receiving Employment Insurance in Saskatchewan dropped 4.6% from March to April. Only 7,650 people in Saskatchewan remained on EI in the month of April. (Regina Leader-Post, June 25, 2008)
